Meet the Stars
Nathan ("Sonny") has been playing saxophone for several years. has been trained in both classical and jazz styles, and recently picked up harmonica. As a vocalist toting a 70s/80s-esque raspy style, he is the lead vocalist for the group. Starting out as a solo artist under the name "Sonny Adam", he eventually decided to seek out other talented people to join him. The addition of new players encouraged him to rebrand and form Sonny And The Stars.

Derek Azpeitia, an Audio Engineering student at Purdue University, is a hotshot guitarist. His influences of heavy rock and metal fit nicely with our style, and he has plenty of blues in him to compliment. Involved in many projects and an extremely active member of the music scene at Purdue, Derek is beloved by his bandmates, friends, and community. He can often be found around campus on nice days, shredding for hours.
Gavin Weller, also a student at Purdue University, lays it down for the Stars with some heavy blues-oriented guitar licks. Having played back home in his younger days with blues groups, he has built up quite the portfolio of phrasing, and continues to amaze both audiences and us with his incredible skill. He is also a member of the Purdue Jazz Bands, and is often on stage alongside Sonny for Purdue Jazz events.
Genci Duraku, Purdue Electrical and Computer Engineering Student (victim) and bass extrordinaire, holds down the low end of the band with incredible consistiency. Having started playing bass only recently, it is clear he's put in the time and effort to make himself into a superstar. Reggae influences provide plenty of feel and soul that help add some bounce to the band, in more ways than one.
Matthew Shutko , our amazing drummer, has proven himself to be quite impressive during his short time here at Purdue. While only a freshman, he auditioned for and became the newest (and in our humble opinion, the best) drummer of Midnight Pancakes, and in mid-Janurary 2026, he signed on for his so-far generational tenure with the Stars. Pulling style from everything from Arctic Monkeys to Gap Band to John Bonham, Matthew himself has the stated goal of "being in every West Lafayette Band" by the time he graduates. Can we blame him? Not in the slightest. Just as long as he makes rehearsal on time ;) (he always does)

Jacob Prior holds down the low tones on bass for Sonny & The Stars. He currently plays in the Purdue University "Tower Of Power" Jazz Ensemble, and specializes in both electric and upright bass. A lover of both funk, jazz, and newer metal, his stylistic and consistient grooves create an amazing vibe with the Stars.
Ryan Burton was the lead guitarist for Sonny & The Stars. His experience as a bassist in Purdue's jazz bands made him a great candidate for the band, which Nathan quickly noticed. His improvisation style and quick, blusey licks make his a great addition to the band's sound. Now as a Purdue alumni, he competes in regional PBA tournaments and aspires to be a professional bowler.

Gio Serio is a guitar aficionado. Having lots of live experience in high school, he brought valuable insight to the band's creative and social direction. Playing rhythm guitar for the band, his mastery of chordal patterns and popular songs helped create the backbone for which the band can build upon for DORM.

Nathan Langemeier holds down the band with his grounding basslines. He met the other Nathan in high school, but did not join the band until he decided to study engineering at Purdue University. Having a vast knowledge of jazz under his belt, Nathan aims to blend his talents with rock elements, which made him a perfect fit for the group at the time.

Matt started playing drums when he was 12. At first, he was frustrated that he wasn't very good, so he practiced and improved himself to the drum master he is now. By playing the drums, he has met many people and made several good friends. He has been involved in both jazz band and various percussion ensembles, and even does some composing in his spare time.
